Green Mount
Jan. 16th, 1881
We opened our Society by reading the 42 Psalm, and then we went into the music room. Then Lou played Old Rosin The Beau, very well indeed. Then Lucie read The Closing Year which is a lovely piece and she read it better then usual. Nannie then played Fra Davolo which she said she did not know but proved that she did. Lulie read a very amusing scrap from cousin Lou's Scrap book which we all enjoied though it was so short. Mattie Kate read If We Only Knew, which is a lovely piece, Sallie first played Drippin Fountain alias the scale of C major but afterwarde played Spinlie a very difficult piece but she managed to get throug with it very creditably. Cousin Lou and cousin Florence sang some duets for us which closed a very pleasant evening.

I have recently obtained information indicating that my great-great aunt, Sadie Pearson Biscoe Hanks (1879-1922) was a student at the Green Mount Home School for Young Ladies. Can you confirm this? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

DeleteI may have replied previously, but if not, yes she was a student here the school year of 1887-88. She is listed in the roster in the back of the book "Green Mount After the War." Copies are available from the University of Virginia at very reasonable prices. If you just google that title you will find it. Thanks for viewing the site. ReplyDeleteSo true...thanks for reading this blog. I have so neglected "the girls" while working on the reprint of Green Mount. I shall return to this work soon. It brings me great joy to read their writings and imagine all these things happening right here in this lovely old home.
